MMA, an essential raw material

Today, the production of methyl methacrylate is estimated at more than three millions tons per year worldwide (SRI).

Methyl methacrylate (MMA) is by far the most widely manufactured methacrylate.


Its versatility allows it to be used to make a pure homopolymer: polymethyl methacrylate or PMMA.


Methyl methacrylate can also be used in combination with monomers to produce a series of polymers with different properties according to the required needs.

Properties and uses

The primary use of this monomer, in the form of colourless syrup, is to produce plastic acrylic material: PMMA.

This transparent thermoplastic can then be made into:

  • resins
  • sheet
  • blocks

However, the use of MMA is not limited to PMMA application.


With its reliable and refined properties of stability, resistance, strength, radiance and durability in the industrial industry, MMA is used in a large number of applications:

  • paints and coatings (ink, paint, polish, coating, etc.)
  • additives
  • water treatment
  • plastic material
  • medical equipment
  • dental care (fillings, dentures…)
  • etc.


It is also an essential ingredient in the manufacture of artificial marble or high value-added products in industries such as electronics, paper, leather, wax and polish, adhesive and sealant.
